Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born to a musically inclined family on August 9th, 1963 in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and cousin of singer Dionne Warwick. As a young girl, Houston started singing professionally in the church choir. She was a backing vocalist for Chaka Khosns 1978 single Im Every Woman with her mother.
